Stop heating and let the pot cool
If a pot leaks or behaves abnormally during brewing, stop using it. Do not loosen, tighten or dismantle a hot or pressurized pot. Let it cool completely before inspection and follow the handling instructions for your model. A seam leak and repeated discharge from a safety valve require different decisions.
This guide draws on a Bialetti Moka Express instruction sheet hosted with a retail product. It is a model-specific reference, not permission to apply every step to a Brikka, an induction model or another brand. Use the manual supplied with your exact pot.
For water at the chamber seam
After cooling, check the manual's assembly steps, the gasket condition and whether coffee residue is on the sealing rim. Those are the water-leak checks in the cited Moka Express instructions. If a component is worn or damaged, use replacement parts specified for the exact model and size.
Record the brand, model and size before ordering. Similar cup counts or appearances do not establish that two replacement seals fit interchangeably. If the gasket, funnel, threads or chamber looks damaged, do not compensate with extra force, tape, glue or an improvised seal. Ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm the appropriate repair.
Follow the model's assembly instructions rather than an invented torque rule. Do not use the handle as a lever. If the correctly assembled pot still leaks, stop using it and seek assistance instead of repeatedly heating it to test a suspected fault.
For a safety-valve symptom
The cited manual directs users to check moka-appropriate coffee, whether the grounds were pressed down and whether too much water was used. Persistent valve leakage is a reason to stop and contact the seller. Do not treat a recurring valve symptom as normal or as proof that only the gasket needs replacement.
Do not poke a generic safety-valve opening with a needle or toothpick, unscrew the valve for an unapproved repair, block it or modify it. The inspection method described for the cited Bialetti valve depends on its design. Other valve structures may require different maintenance; if the exact procedure is unclear, ask the manufacturer.
Filter-plate holes and the safety valve are different parts. A manual's filter-cleaning tool instruction must not be transferred to the valve. See our cleaning guide for related maintenance questions while keeping the exact manual as the authority.
Replace by condition and the model's schedule
There is no single proven gasket lifetime or replacement price for every moka pot. Check visible condition and the preventive schedule in your manual. A calendar estimate is not proof that a particular gasket is still fit for use, nor is a new gasket proof that the whole pot is sound.
Compare the actual compatible part, shipping and repair advice before deciding whether to replace a component or retire the pot. This article supplies no fixed price, guaranteed two-minute repair or diagnosis based solely on a leak. Our size guide can help explain capacity terminology, but cannot verify spare-part fit.
Prepare an assistance checklist
| Record after cooling | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Brand, model and capacity marking | Find the correct manual and parts. |
| Observed leak location | Distinguish the chamber seam from a valve symptom. |
| Visible condition | Describe the gasket, rim and components without dismantling an unapproved assembly. |
| Preparation details | Record water level, coffee format and assembly against the instructions. |
| Previous maintenance | Give the seller replacement-part details and when the issue began. |
Use this record when contacting the seller or manufacturer. It is a communication checklist, not an instruction to recreate a fault. For normal preparation after the pot is confirmed fit for use, see our first-brew guide.
