How to Clean an Espresso Machine: A Model-Specific Guide
Identify the exact machine and the task before adding a cleaner. Brushing loose grounds, running a detergent cleaning cycle, removing mineral scale and washing a milk container are different jobs.
This guide compares manufacturer instructions and provides a record sheet. It does not replace your model's manual or diagnose a fault. Check the model suffix and regional manual before following a procedure.

Choose the care path for your machine
| Equipment or task | Use the instructions for | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Portafilter machine | Basket, portafilter, group head and any prescribed cleaning cycle | Every machine accepts a blind basket or powder backflush |
| Fully automatic machine | The removable brew group, tablet application point and on-screen prompts | Portafilter instructions transfer to its brew group |
| Milk system | Its exact LatteGo, carafe or steam-wand design | Every milk component uses the same soak or detergent |
| Mineral scale | Approved descaler, dilution, cycle and rinse sequence | Coffee-oil cleaner is interchangeable with descaler |
| Integrated grinder | Manufacturer-approved brush, disassembly and cleaning method | Every grinder permits cleaning pellets or water |
Record your model, manual link, approved consumables and required accessories first. Our moka versus espresso comparison explains the equipment difference; moka-pot cleaning instructions should not be transferred to an electric espresso machine.
After-use cleanup: follow the component instructions
The Breville BES870 manual describes rinsing the filter basket and portafilter after use, wiping the group-head area, and cleaning the steam wand after milk texturing. Its wand purge is a specified machine operation; it is not an instruction to draw a tub of cleaning solution into every steam wand.
- Separate loose-ground cleanup from a pressure cleaning cycle.
- Use the handles and keep clear of hot surfaces, escaping steam and flowing water. Follow the manual's cooling and power-disconnection requirements for removable-part cleaning; powered cleaning cycles have their own setup.
- Empty and clean drip trays or grounds containers according to their instructions and prompts.
- Finish the prescribed rinse and dry or reassemble parts as directed before brewing again.
The BES870 manual specifies hand washing its parts and accessories. The dishwasher advice for a different brand or milk container is not permission to dishwasher-clean these components.
Removable parts: clean only what your manual permits
A removable basket is different from the machine's internal plumbing. Read the instructions before soaking a portafilter handle, removing a shower screen, pulling out a brew group or applying lubricant.
Philips's maintenance guidance describes weekly lukewarm-water rinsing and monthly coffee-oil-remover treatment for compatible removable brew groups. Verify the model coverage and the exact tablet procedure. These are separate from mineral-scale removal.
For the BES870, the manual gives its own basket-unblocking, shower-screen and grinder-cleaning methods. Use the specified tools and accessible components; do not run grinder pellets or water through an integrated grinder without its manufacturer's approval.
A detergent cleaning cycle is not descaling
The BES870 manual distinguishes a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE indicator for its cleaning cycle from a steadily lit indicator for descaling. It specifies a cleaning disc and tablet for the former, and a different descale-and-rinse procedure for the latter. Use the manual revision supplied for your machine rather than copying a button sequence from another model.
Urnex's coffee-system cleaning guide also treats espresso cleaning as a specific process. The cleaner manufacturer's instructions and the machine manufacturer's approval both matter: a powder recipe does not automatically substitute for a machine-specified tablet.
- Identify which task is due from the model's prompt or schedule.
- Confirm the approved product, application point, dilution or dose and required accessories.
- Prepare the tank, tray and collection vessel exactly as instructed.
- Complete that procedure and its specified rinsing before returning to coffee preparation.
- Log the task and result. Do not add an extra soak, concentrated dose or extended cycle as an improvised repair.
No single monthly or quarterly descaling interval applies to all machines. Use the model's instructions and relevant water-hardness settings; elapsed time alone does not identify which cleaner is needed.
Philips LatteGo: keep milk-container and brew-group care separate
Philips's support page describes rinsing the two LatteGo parts under tap water or cleaning them in the dishwasher after each use. It provides different care for a classic milk frother and a milk carafe. Check the model coverage before applying any of these instructions.
Do not treat a LatteGo container as a steam wand, invent a cleaning-button sequence, or put coffee-oil tablets into the water tank without the model-specific instruction. Weekly brew-group rinsing and monthly oil-remover maintenance, where specified, are not an additional monthly descaling program.
For purchase context, our Philips 3200 guide is a separate article. Its product name does not replace the exact operating manual for a machine already in your kitchen.
Symptoms guide the next check, not a certain diagnosis
| Observation | Record and check | Avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| Slow or changing brew flow | Prompt/error, water supply, coffee settings and the manual's troubleshooting steps | Scale is the only cause; more detergent will fix it |
| Different taste or crema | Beans, dose, grind, recipe and completed maintenance | A specific component is blocked solely from taste |
| Milk residue | Exact milk-system design and its cleaning procedure | Every component tolerates the same chemical soak |
| Leak or unusual machine behavior | Where and when it occurs, any error code, and manufacturer advice | Automatic permission to remove seals or internal hoses |
Service and part replacement are separate decisions
Do not schedule internal hose inspection, gasket removal or grease application for every machine merely because three months have passed. Follow the permitted owner-maintenance steps and the service instructions for the exact model.
If a fault continues after correctly completed maintenance, record the model, symptoms, prompts, cleaner and completed cycle for manufacturer support. Stop operation and follow its safety instructions for a leak or other unsafe condition. This guide does not recommend stronger cleaner, longer soaking or bypassing a machine control as a repair.
Checks that prevent using the wrong procedure
- Backflush only when prescribed. A solenoid mention alone does not supply a compatible basket, cleaner or cycle.
- Match the application point. Detergent tablets, descaler and milk-system products are not interchangeable.
- Use the stated rinse. Do not substitute a universal number of tanks or rinse cycles.
- Check materials and washing instructions. A claim that one product works on all steel and plastic is not proof for every component.
- Respect the permitted disassembly. Remove screens, seals, tips or brew groups only as instructed.
- Use the specified concentration and time. More product or a longer soak is not automatically more effective.
Buy supplies for the task you have identified
Check the supplies that came with your machine first. An approved cleaning disc, tablet, descaler or small brush may already be available. Buy a replacement only after confirming the exact specification and permitted use.
Checked example: Urnex Scoopz brush and scoop tool
The October 8 Amazon check for ASIN B004L8RTSS showed the Scoopz Espresso Brush Tool with an Urnex storefront. Urnex's Scoopz specification describes a brush with an integrated detergent scoop. Confirm the current package contents and seller on the selected listing before ordering.
Consider it when: your machine instructions permit brushing accessible group-head residue and you need a suitable replacement tool.
Choose another supply when: the required task is descaling, a specified tablet cycle, a milk-system procedure or a blocked internal component. The brush does not replace those products or establish machine compatibility.
The manufacturer's sheet gives a two-scoop, 3g dosing example. It is not a universal dose for every powder or machine. We have not independently measured scratch resistance, durability or repair effectiveness.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my espresso machine?
Use the schedule and prompts for your exact model. Routine cleanup after use, a detergent cleaning cycle and descaling are different tasks; they do not share one universal monthly or quarterly interval.
Can every espresso machine be backflushed?
No. Perform a backflush or cleaning cycle only when the manufacturer specifies it for the exact machine, with the prescribed basket or disc, cleaner, dose and sequence. A solenoid specification alone is not a complete procedure.
Can I put coffee-oil cleaning tablets in the water tank?
Do not improvise the application point. A coffee-oil remover is not a descaler. Follow the exact machine and product instructions for where a tablet or solution belongs and how it is rinsed out.
How do I clean a Philips LatteGo milk system?
Philips describes rinsing the two LatteGo parts under tap water or cleaning them in the dishwasher after each use. Confirm that guidance applies to your model; a different milk carafe or frother can require a different procedure.
Does a cleaning brush replace descaling?
No. A brush can remove accessible grounds or residue where the machine instructions permit brushing. It does not circulate a descaling solution, replace a cleaning cycle or establish that a fault has been repaired.
Should I use more cleaner if water flow stays slow?
Do not increase dose or extend a soak beyond the instructions. Several faults or settings can affect flow. Record the symptoms and completed maintenance, then use the manufacturer troubleshooting or service route if the problem persists.
