Start with model code and serving size

Alessi offers the 9090 in 1-, 3-, 6- and 10-cup sizes. These are small moka servings, not four mug sizes. The corresponding maker codes are 9090/1, 9090/3, 9090/6 and 9090/M. Check the code in the Amazon title and selected variant before checkout; a similar product image or a shared variation family is not enough.

Use the maker code in each listing below to distinguish the 1-cup model from the visually similar 6-cup model.

Why the 9090 is a design purchase

Richard Sapper designed the 9090 for Alessi. The maker describes an 18/10 stainless body, a magnetic steel base, a widened footprint, a spout shaped to limit drips and a lever closure. Alessi also identifies the 9090 as its first espresso coffee maker and the first Alessi object exhibited at MoMA. Those are design and construction facts, not proof that it brews better coffee than a less expensive pot.

The 9090 uses a stovetop brewing method. Alessi calls it an espresso coffee maker, but it is not a pump espresso machine. Choose it for its specific construction and appearance if those matter to you; compare your total checkout cost with a conventional moka pot if they do not.

Exact Amazon listings

Each button uses a distinct Amazon US product identifier paired with the maker code. The 1- and 3-cup Amazon pages showed matching titles; for the 6- and 10-cup entries, the maker codes were also checked against published product references because the direct Amazon page text was unavailable during this review. Confirm the selected variant at checkout.

Alessi 9090/1, 1 cup

The smallest 9090, with a maker-stated capacity of about 2.4 fl oz. Its base is small: Alessi warns that an induction hob must detect an item at least 90 mm across.

Alessi 9090/3, 3 cups

A three-small-cup model with a maker-stated capacity of about 5.1 fl oz. The Amazon US listing explicitly names 9090/3; compare it with the 1-cup model by your usual serving size.

Alessi 9090/6, 6 cups

A larger 9090 with a maker-stated capacity of about 10.1 fl oz. Check the selected variant before checkout.

Check your induction hob first

Alessi says the 9090 has a magnetic steel bottom suitable for induction cooking. The maker specifically warns that the 1-cup model needs a hob that switches on with an item at least 90 mm in diameter. Check your hob's minimum detectable pan size, especially for the smallest pot. Do not assume “induction compatible” means every zone will recognize every size.

If you are comparing simpler designs, see the induction moka guide and the material comparison.

Budget for care and replacement parts

Before buying, check how to obtain the correct gasket, filter and funnel for the exact 9090 size. Do not substitute a Bialetti part by matching only the cup label. Follow Alessi's instructions for water level, heat, cleaning and cooling; never force open a hot, pressurized pot. A premium body does not remove normal gasket maintenance.

Compare the complete purchase: pot, suitable hob and any replacement parts you may need. Prices, sellers and stock change, so this guide does not publish a fixed “best value” or durability score.

Common questions

Is the 9090 a pump espresso machine?

No. It is a stovetop coffee maker; Alessi uses “espresso coffee maker” in the product name.

Does every 9090 size work on induction?

The maker lists a magnetic induction-ready base, but the smallest pot may not be detected by your hob. Check the minimum pan diameter.

Can I use a 6-cup link to order the 1-cup pot?

Do not rely on Amazon's variation selector. Use the exact maker code and check the selected product at checkout; the links here point to distinct ASINs.
