Start with the finished drink volume

Bialetti NZ lists its 3-cup Moka Express at approximately 130 mL brewed volume and the 6-cup model at approximately 250 mL. These are small serving labels, not three or six standard mugs. Check your exact model and what you actually pour. A 2.5–3 oz demitasse can divide a batch among people; a larger mug can take the whole batch or leave room for milk and water.

Choose the shape you like to drink from, then check capacity and care instructions for the exact cup. The six examples below compare formats; they are not a hands-on performance ranking.

Three cup formats for moka coffee

Small clear cups: useful when serving a concentrated moka brew in several portions. Check capacity, rim shape and cleaning guidance rather than assuming all espresso cups are the same size.

Regular mugs: a clean mug you already own is often enough. A larger cup makes sense if you add warmed milk or hot water. You do not need a specialty mug to brew moka coffee.

Insulated cups: useful for slower sipping or a commute, but cup-style lids and travel seals differ. Insulation slows cooling; it does not guarantee that flavor stays unchanged or make a milk drink shelf-stable. Compare more sizes in our small insulated mug guide.

Six cup choices to compare

The first three are small cup sets; the next three are insulated serving or travel options. Check the exact size, lid and cleaning instructions before ordering.

Record Usable Capacity and Fit Before Choosing a Mug

A listed brim capacity is not necessarily the volume you serve. Record your actual drink amount and intended headspace separately. For a mug you already own, use room-temperature water and a graduated container to record the volume at your normal fill line. This is your measurement for that vessel, not a verified specification for another model.

Common questions

How big should my moka coffee cup be?

Compare your actual finished volume and any milk or water additions with the cup's nominal capacity, allowing practical space below the rim. Pot sizes are small-serving labels.

Will an 8 oz cup hold a full 6-cup Moka Express batch?

Not necessarily. Bialetti NZ lists around 250 mL for its 6-cup model, above 8 US fluid ounces (about 237 mL), before lid clearance.

Is a lidded cup automatically leakproof?

No. Check the exact lid's current maker instructions before putting it in a bag.
