BREWER COMPATIBILITY GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 8, 2026
Coffee Filter Buying Guide: Basket, Cone, Chemex & AeroPress
Start with the filter specified for your exact brewer. Basket, cone, Chemex and AeroPress filters have different shapes and sizes; a high rating or low pack price cannot fix the wrong fit.
This guide uses manufacturer documentation and dated retail checks. We have not run a comparative taste, filtration, chemical-safety or lifetime test. The two shopping examples below are for Standard AeroPress owners; other brewer families need their own matching filters.

Identify your brewer before choosing a pack
- Write down the model. Look at the brewer, its instructions or your purchase record. A brand may sell several filter-basket designs.
- Find the filter specification. Record the shape and code in the manual. Cup capacity can help identify a brewer but is not a universal filter-size system.
- Check the selected listing. Confirm its package code, size and total filter count. Reviews and photos may combine several variants.
- Try a small compatible pack first. Check installation against the manual before committing shelf space to a bulk order. Do not reshape the wrong filter and assume the fit is approved.
| Brewer family | Check before buying | Common mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Basket-style drip | Manual-specified basket dimensions and filter type | Assuming every maker from the same brand uses the same basket |
| Cone-style drip or pour-over | The exact cone design and size/code specified for that dripper | Buying a numbered cone solely because another cone looks similar |
| Chemex three-cup / Funnex | FP-2 or FP-2N half-moon format | Using the larger pre-folded filters as a universal replacement |
| Chemex six-cup and larger | FS-100, FSU-100, FC-100 or FP-1, checked against the model | Treating every square filter as unfolded |
| Standard AeroPress | Standard paper or metal disc; check the named brewer models | Selecting an XL disc or confusing one pack with a multipack |

Chemex: check capacity, code and folding
Chemex's filter support guide identifies FP-2 and FP-2N half-moon filters for its three-cup brewers and Funnex. They require folding. For six-cup and larger brewers, it lists FS-100 and FSU-100 pre-folded squares, FC-100 pre-folded circles and FP-1 unfolded circles. Check models outside that stated group using their own instructions.
A square outline does not mean the filter arrives unfolded. Chemex presents the larger circle and square formats as choices of shape and handling; this guide does not establish one as a better-extracting or better-tasting winner. Follow the manufacturer's placement instructions, including the orientation of the thicker side toward the spout.
Two checked options for Standard AeroPress owners
AeroPress's size guide specifies Standard filters for Original, Clear, Premium, Go and Go Plus. AeroPress XL uses an XL filter. The following selected listings are Standard accessories, not replacements for an XL brewer or a drip-machine basket.
White paper: one pack, 350 filters
The October 8 retail check for ASIN B000LTOCSG showed 1 Pack, 350 Filters selected. AeroPress's Standard paper product page also identifies a 350-count refill.
Consider this if: you want a paper refill for a compatible Standard brewer. Count your actual batches when choosing pack size.
Check another option if: you own an XL or need a basket/cone filter. A separate two-pack selection changes the order quantity.

The October 8 retail check for ASIN B0B3BTYSTD showed Standard size and Gray selected, separate from XL and Standard (Pack of 2). The manufacturer sells this as a Standard reusable stainless-steel filter.
Consider this if: you prefer a reusable disc and are willing to clean it according to its instructions.
Check another option if: you want paper filtration, own an XL or cannot confirm the fit of your brewer and cap. We have no measured durability or taste winner here.

Choose paper or reusable filtration by your routine
Check both compatibility and cleanup before comparing costs. Paper needs a continuing supply; a reusable filter needs cleaning and may eventually need replacement. We have not measured the taste, oil retention or fine-particle removal of these two products under a controlled recipe.
If you compare them yourself, use the same beans, dose, water amount and brewing instructions, then record the filter, brew time, sediment and your taste preference. Change one variable at a time. Your preference is a personal observation, not a universal performance ranking.
White or brown paper alone does not prove processing chemistry, health effects or an environmental advantage. Read the exact manufacturer's material and disposal information. The word compostable also needs to be considered alongside your local collection rules.
Calculate cost per brew using your actual purchase
Count batches rather than cups: one batch can fill more than one drinking cup. Write down the total amount paid for the filter order, the total number of usable filters and how many fresh sheets you use per batch.
- Paper cost per sheet = total filter-order cost ÷ usable sheet count.
- Paper cost per batch = cost per sheet × fresh sheets per batch.
- Supply length = usable sheet count ÷ (sheets per batch × batches per day).
With one fresh sheet per batch and one batch a day, 350 sheets cover 350 batches, not a full 365-day year. Two batches a day use the same pack in 175 days. These are arithmetic examples, not shelf-life or reuse guarantees.
For a reusable filter, divide its actual purchase cost by the brews you actually complete, then account separately for cleaning and replacement. Do not project guaranteed savings from an assumed lifetime. Compare costs only between options that fit your brewer and meet your own brewing preferences.
Store and use filters according to their instructions
Keep unused paper protected from dampness, strong odors and physical damage. Follow the packaging instructions, inspect the paper before use, and replace visibly contaminated or damaged filters. We found no manufacturer support for a universal two- or three-year storage life.
Rinsing and reuse instructions can differ by product. Use the guidance for the exact filter and brewer; a customer review about reuse does not establish a safe or effective reuse limit for every paper. For reusable metal filters, follow the specified cleaning method and inspect fit and condition before brewing. Do not apply a universal dishwasher rule across different products.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the correct coffee filter size?
Use the exact brewer model and the filter code in its manual. A brand name, cup count or similar-looking cone does not establish compatibility. Check the filter shape and package code before buying a bulk pack.
Do the same Chemex filters fit three-cup and larger brewers?
Chemex identifies FP-2 and FP-2N half-moon filters for three-cup brewers and Funnex. Its support guide lists FS-100, FSU-100, FC-100 and FP-1 for six-cup and larger brewers. Check other models against their own documentation.
Will a Standard AeroPress filter fit an XL brewer?
No. AeroPress specifies Standard filters for Original, Clear, Premium, Go and Go Plus, and XL filters for AeroPress XL. Check the brewer model and selected filter size together.
How many filters do I need for a year?
Count brewing batches, not drinking cups. At one fresh paper filter per batch and one batch each day, you need 365 filters for a 365-day year, before allowing for damaged filters or extra brews. A 350-count pack covers 350 such batches.
Do unused coffee filters have a fixed shelf life?
We have no manufacturer evidence for a universal two- or three-year shelf life. Follow the package storage instructions, keep unused filters protected from dampness and odors, and replace visibly damaged or contaminated paper.
